How to engage a design company – Insider Information!

  1. Look at their body or work. Pictures tell a story.
  2. The cheapest is not always the best..often for a reason!
  3. Meet with them where possible.
  4. Ask for references from existing clients
  5. Get firm prices signed off on.
  6. Tell them your budget. This saves both you and them time.
  7. Have them explain the design process step by step.
  8. Talk timeline and expectations.

Evidence they do what they say they do!
Many agencies sprout lyrical about the “process” of designing your brand and packaging but don’t actually have any tangible evidence to show you. Proceed with caution if this is the case.

What price should you be paying?
Brand and product development, digital marketing and advertising should be seen as an “investment” to building your business. Slow and steady is a good way to start with an agency. Let them prove to you that they are worth the “investment”

Meet with your agency
Something we always try to do wherever possible. If we need to jump on aplane then thats what we do. A face to face with your agency contact can be invaluable in working together.

Ask for references from existing clients
Testimonials, referrals and just positive feedback…it all helps in decision process.

Get firm prices signed off on.
Agencies are notorious for finding ways to spend your marketing dollar. Just like having your car serviced ask for a phone call before any extras are done with a firm price. An experienced agency will have this covered.

Tell them your budget
Many people want champagne marketing on a home-brew budget. I often ask clients what their budget is. It gives both my agency and them a common ground to work within.

Have them explain the design process step by step.
Basically what you get as each stage of production. What output you get, what files you walk away with.

Talk timeline.
Often one of my first questions. Your turn-round expectations will determine if the agency needs to drop everything to accommodate you or can schedule you into existing projects.
